Saint-Gengoux-le-National is a charming medieval town that received its market charter in 1166 (thereby becoming a town) following a treaty between the French king, Louis VII, and the Abbey of Cluny, previously responsible for the town. This agreement led to its transformation into a fortified settlement.

For 600 years, the city was called Saint-Gengoux-le-Royal because it was the domain of the crown.
